PILATES

A quick look at the Pilates Method

Contrology (Pilates) is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. Through Contrology you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then through proper repetition of its exercises you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your subconscious activities.  - Joseph Pilates

Balanced Body Pilates Mats

Pilates is a body conditioning exercise system developed in the 1920s by German-born Joseph Pilates, who originally called his method "Contrology."

This method focuses on controlled, low-impact movements designed to build muscle strength and endurance, improve flexibility, and enhance posture and balance. Many of the exercises use gravity and body weight as natural resistance, making it accessible yet deeply effective.

Pilates also incorporates a strong mental component, requiring concentration, controlled breathing, and precise movement, fostering both physical and mental awareness throughout the practice.

Pilates brings profound physical and mental transformation through consistent practice and mindful, purposeful movement.

It can make you feel stronger, relieve pain, improve posture, enhance movement, speed up recovery, and help prevent injuries. It also helps you sharpen focus, deepen breath, calm nerve systems, and reduce stress.

The more you practice Pilates, the more you begin to notice the subtle ways your body communicates. It deepens your awareness, helping you listen, respond, and move with intention.

In short: Pilates helps move better, feel better, and live better.

Pilates is generally divided into two categories: mat-based exercises and those performed using specialized equipment, known as apparatus, including the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and others. Each approach offers distinct benefits and can be practiced independently or in combination for a thorough experience.

Mat Pilates

Balanced Body Pilates Mats

Mat work requires nothing more than your own body and a mat. Using gravity and body weight as natural resistance, it builds strength, control, and flexibility. You can enjoy the energizing flow of movement in a supportive group setting or practice it as a quiet, moving meditation on your own. Mat Pilates is accessible, affordable, and an excellent foundation for your Pilates journey.

Apparatus Pilates

Balanced Body Allegro 2 Reformer

Apparatus Pilates, also known as Equipment or Machine Pilates, includes equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and Barrel. The Reformer is the most popular, but each piece brings its own unique challenge and benefit. With spring resistance and guided movement, apparatus work adds depth, support, and precision, making Pilates highly adaptable for all fitness levels and ages, from beginners to athletes and those recovering from injury.

My Honest Advice: Do Both. If You Can, that is.

Mat and Apparatus Pilates complement each other beautifully, each offering unique benefits and serving different needs.

If you have health issues or physical limitations, and can afford it, go with Apparatus. Because Apparatus Pilates is done in a safer private session setting at the studio, your specific concerns and goals can be better addressed.

If you are fit and healthy, and don't want to spend a lot of money, go with Mat classes.

Pilates is highly adaptable and can be gentle enough to practice daily, if that suits your lifestyle.

Practicing three times a week is ideal, twice a week is still excellent, and even once a week can make a meaningful difference. The more consistently you practice, the sooner you'll see results and the easier it becomes to maintain the progress you've developed.
